You have to be able to get through
the first hundred pages without losing your mind. Then it gets easier. Not what I would recommend for a first Pynchon read. Go with "Vineland" or "Crying of Lot 49", just to see if you can adjust to his prose and his encyclopedic paranoia. I think you'd like "Vineland."
