It is also easily divisible, and impervious to corrosion. It is also very dense, and highly portable, so it is easily stored and transported. It is malleable, easily hammered into thin sheets and fantastic shapes. And it has very little practical or industrial uses. Even gold jewelry is valuable primarily for the workmanship involved in its production.
It also has a long history as a medium of exchange. I am told that makes it ideal as money (let's face it, barter can be very cumbersome).
But as far as I can tell, its only value is that everyone wants it. Like all sorts of money, it is essentially worthless in hard times, it is only of value during good times. Gold will be useless after the Apocalypse, I would invest in canned goods, camping gear, blankets and ammunition.
