Or has the behavior spread to other pods in the area? Are there similar reports in other parts of the world?
The orcas are smart enough to know the boats are not edible, and they are probably aware crews of mammals are aboard. Are they just playing, engaging in a form of rough horseplay? Or are they pissed off at these boats, perhaps about someone attacking them in the past, or disturbing (to them) behavior by other vessels. Perhaps some orcas have been entangled in fishing gear, and other whales are upset and seeking revenge. Yachts are about the same size as fishing boats. I'm just thinking out loud here...
I would be very interested in knowing if this aggressive behavior is spreading to other areas. I have heard stories of orcas attacking and eating native fishermen in Arctic waters in the past, but I don't know if these are actual incidents or apocryphal stories.
