You're right, social and fiscal issues should have no connection, and a position on one should not automatically translate to a position on the other.
But working up the zeal and fanaticism to be fully committed to a political obsession requires tapping into deep psychological energy sources. I'm convinced the Conservatives exploit repressed sexuality to power their convictions.
