Speculation indeed! Can't go to this year's meeting but I'd love to see the Q&A after this talk, should be fun.
In geology, we call this sort of speculation "arm-waving", and this hypothesis has the author waving fast enough to lift off the ground. Cute theory, speculative evidence, sort of surprised with the Geologic Society of America's selection.
