When somebody is talking about "love of country," they're talking about a culture, a set of ideas and principles, a system of laws, and a way of life. Germany in 1939 was not Germany today, and the things that are different is what people are talking about when they talk about "country."
In the United States, nobody has to "earn" the right to bitch about government, the constitution, or anything else, for that matter. We were founded on the idea that if the way things were being done sucked, it is the fundamental and inherent right of human beings to be able to change it. Our first founding document led with that. We were founded on protests, pamplets, town meetings, debate, dissent, and disagreement.
I may not agree with ER on a lot, but I for one am not going to say he has no right to be here if he doesn't like things the way they are. "Love it or leave it" have never been the only two options. When the car isn't working you can sit in the car and pretend it's running. You can walk to town. Or you can get out, put up the hood, and get to work.

A country is just a geographical location.
