Yet gender does matter, and not in a good way: Our culture has historically made light of boys being molested. For as long as I can remember, the term "altar boy" had smirking connotations. And there are the jokes about Greek men and boys, and the bawdy version of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" going on about the "men on boys". I don't know of any equivalent humor directed at girls being molested, and I think most people would be horrified to hear it. We're a bit callous when it comes to protecting boys, I think, and that was no doubt a contributing factor in creating the preconditions for the latest scandal.
