The Spanish transliterated Indian languages so they sounded Spanish. Indian names for geographical entities are very common in Latin America, but they all sound like Spanish baby talk.
I suppose we did much the same here; Tallahassee, Ohio, Massachusetts, Toronto, Dakota.
