Wars fought over race, religion, ethnicity, or narrow minded nationalistic views are stupid wars. The Balkans, Rwanda, Al Queda come to mind. A war triggered by greed and a lust for power is stupid, too. Saddam's attempt to steal 1/3 of the world's oil supply in 1990 comes to mind.

But going to war to preserve or to gain one's freedom is noble, and a good fight. Freedom from communist or fascist oppression, or freedom from Islamic or other religious fundamentalism, with all its horrors for Mankind.

Wars motivated or made necessary to defend the lofty ideals of free societies are perhaps the only wars worth fighting. Alas, there are so many in this world who would deny freedom, democracy, human rights - there's no shortage of enemies to fight.
