Did you read about it?
Mick and the boys are doing a...
'benefit' concert in LA, on Feb/06/03,
to raise awareness of "global warming".
Aha!...So that's why Mick & Keith wrote that tune in the 80's, "She's so Hot."
But why LA, and not NYC, you may ask?
Simple!...They don't want to be accused of hypocrisy.
By playing in LA, with their sound and light system sucking up [my guess] about
20,000KW of power for [perhaps] a two-hour show, they'll get their electricity from the Hoover Dam most likely.
If they played in NYC, they would be plugged into Con-Edison's grid, where
most of their power would come from coal-burning power-plants.
So, using a few chemistry thermodynamic values, and physics,
this is how much coal would be burned
[theoretically] if they were to have played in NYC.
Energy [electric] = Ec
Ee = 20,000KW x 1,000J/s/KW x 7,200sec = 1.44 x 10^11J.
Coal [mostly carbon "C"] = 12grams/mole
C=0 Bond energy = 8.71KJ/mole
CO2 = 2(8.71KJ/mole) =
1,742,000J/44gm(C02)
Gm(C) = 1.44 x 10^11J/ 1.742,000J/44gm(CO2)/12gm(C)/44gm(CO2)
Kg(C)=(roughly) 1,000kg(C)
Pounds of coal burned =
1,000kg x 2.2Ibs/kg = {rough estimation}
2,200Ibs of coal.
So there you have it! The Rolling Stones
will not perform their "global warming"
benefit concert in NYC because Mick and the Boys don't want Con-Edison to burn
2,200Ibs of coal during their concert, assuming their Light & Sound system
pump out 20,000Kw of power and do it for
2-hours straight.
Aha!
"Start me up! Start me up! Start me up!
I'll never stop..."
