I'm sure they could breathe, but I don't know exactly how. I can understand pilots, with their full-face helmets could, but I'm wondering if the turbulence wouldn't just suck the air out of a mask, or make it impossible to exhale, as you mention.
I know I had a bit of trouble breathing at 100 mph on a bike, didn't stay there long. Not because of the breathing, though.
Hum. I'm sure it's a non-problem, don't know how they'd handle it.
