They may have been on "pep" pills, I have no idea if that even matters, but it looks like these pilots were let down in several different ways, including by Canadians in the air and on the ground.
I thought Canadians had a better grasp of how dear a price can occasionally be extracted for participation in world affairs. Chretien and his Liberals are in no small way responsible for putting an anti-American spin on this tragedy.
