In Search of the Universal Fudge Factor
A friend and I considered writing a paper on that topic for the Journal of Irreproducable Results (scientific humor magazine) back in 1987. Fudge factors are those funny little multipliers that get inserted into equations to make them actually match up with reality.
We kept noticing how equations often had Pi/2 in them. We believed that Pi/2 was the Universal Fudge Factor (Fu). It seemed funny at the time, but then we were in a class tracing FORTRAN and PDP-11 Assembly language source code as it pertains to DSCS-III satellite control software. After several hours of that, damn near anything else would've sounded funny.
