Internet companies shaken down by free-spending states

Under threat of being forced to pay sales taxes on everything they've ever sold, some internet companies started collecting sales taxes. Too bad. A lousy precedent.

The appetite of government for money is infinite. Here in California, we're in a deficit because the Democratic state government spent every extra nickel that came in during the dot.com boom, and then some.

If California's spending had simply kept pace with inflation and increased state population during the Davis regime, spending would have still increased 21 percent, but we would currently be sitting on a $5 billion surplus.
