You wanna know what ticks me off about SUVs? Their drivers.
I've got my little commuter rollerskate -- my choice, not their fault. And what do they do? They, in their behemoths, tailgate me even though I average 5 mph over the speed limit. Rain, freezing rain, ice: it doesn't matter. They are driving tanks, so they use the muscle to push everyone else out of the way. I love it when the trucks box one of these bozos in.
At night, they shine their big freakin' headlights into my car at such a close range that I could read by them, blinding me with my own mirrors. So I adjust my mirrors to shine back at them, sincerely hoping I get the big jerks right in the eye.
For every 1 person who opposes SUVs and other large vehicles on principle, there are probably 20 like me who have no serious gripe with the cars, but would like to have them taken away from their inconsiderate and sometimes dangerous drivers.
[An aside: For all the comparisons with the heroes of the Second World War, we seem to avoid those wartime behaviors that make us unhappy. Gasoline rationing is one of those. Considering that fuel availability may become a serious issue in view of where the next projected battlefield is, I am amazed that people driving SUVs because they can rather than for any reason related to work, family or terrain, are not trading them in now.]
