In the early sixties as a kid I helped my dad do this, split hardwood cut-offs from the mill for firewood.

As a kid, was exciting to discover a flying squirrel at night when you went to the outhouse or hear the haunting call of the Great Northern Diver. Ever called back to a Whiperwill at night by imitating its call or cup your hands to make the sound of the Great Horned Owl to get back a response?

My first kill was a Red Squirrel...right between the eyes. Cut the tail off, stuffed its end into the 22 shell casing and made a keep sake for my wrist. Don't forget the sweet smell of venison either, hanging on the racks outside after a recent hunt. Gutted, drained and hanging upside down.
