The issue is integrity and moral consistency, and the problem of the supremacy of political expedience over moral judgment. The examples I have been discussing show politics taking precedence over whether one is doing the right thing or not.

NATO at its base was founded as an organization of free nations opposed to communist ones. There was never any question of a totalitarian communist state joining, so its integrity held up fairly well.
