I think a much more practical questions are
Why do they exist at all? What in the hell keeps them warm if not geothermal venting?
And: Are they postitioned to facilitate the ice shelves rapid migration into the oceans?
Here is one idea for the numbnutz ufoologists:
The water is kept hot by ETI's power plants in their secret Antarctic bases.
