Good points Mike,

I would add that all viruses are constantly mutating too. Our present version of the common cold is vastly different from the ones we caught ten years ago or twenty.

The body is constantly updating its 'anti-virus' software. However, particularly unusual viral strains - would catch us off guard and wipe us out pretty fast. Much as DDT did the insect world until it assimilated the data necessary for survival and passing it on in its DNA structure to successive generations.

Earth and humanity would survive an 'Andromeda strain' scenario - it's just it wouldn't be too pretty for awhile.
