The late hours I work have allowed me, on clear nights, to follow Mars' drift across Scorpius for more than a month. Antares, "Rival of Mars", lost the rivalry at least three weeks ago and looks positively dim by comparison. At my latitude, the scorpion's tail brushes the horizon and (guessing) Mars is 10 to 15 degrees above.
The ages-old dilemma of stargazers (Northern Hemisphere variety, with a nod to Nick) - when the sky is its most beautiful, the weather is warmest, but least reliable. When the air is clearest, it's too damn cold to be outdoors!
