Blow the plasma outwards
Creating a cylindrical magnetic field between the two shield-plates with the negative electrode along the central axis would effectively push the plasma outwards, while simultaneously pulling the plasma apart and decreasing its density. Blowing the plasma outwards like this might mean the impact would be around the sides of the second plate rather than dead center, maybe it would completely miss the second plate.
