statistics and meteorites

I noticed a vast amount is published on meteorites with some amazing conclusions. They take a single observation (one meterorite is one sample)and then take 30 or more sub samples and then say it is representative of another planet. Then write a paper on a single sample. And this is science??

The observations seem okay, so far the conclusions make sense - but making sweeeping statements based on 100 sub-samples from one meteorite is a little misleading....
apparently, over 300 meteorites from Mars have been found and analyzed to death - and people are scratchimng their heads saying "we are getting conflicting results".

I wonder why?

300 or even 600 meteorites from mars equates to sample equivalent to one for an area the size of Texas.

I am not saying anyone is wrong.....just bemused by the detail someone puts into, and the widespread ramifications ....based on a single sample (and that is what each really is). Think about it. No just think.
