Note that the old time guys who proposed the tandem brute force approach were real world aerospace engineers who built and flew actual hardware. Today's powerpoint engineers often come up with innovative, elegant solutions on CAD system simulations that often have problems being realized in metal and worse yet suffer from the "Law of Unintended Consequences".

I prefer Mars missions that don't auger in. Do the tandem.
