Couldn't radiation (causing fast genetic mutations) rather increase the appearance of life, its evolution and speed up the ermegeance of intelligence?
Of course, it could also speed up its destruction, BUT if it reached fast enough a state where it realizes how dangerous radiations are to the organisms, it could protect itself faster too...
