I don't think it's a shadow because the edge of the light edge of the ravine is at the same angle and just above the dark soil, so each should catch the same sun. It might be frost, a lot of light soil covering anything as well. I just get the impression it might show a cross section of the ground, a layer of light soil and dark underneath.
