Interestingly I attended an astrobiology conference in Sydney a few months ago and was talking with one of the speakers on gravitational lensing. This has apparently enormous potential for finding new planets and can be done with relatively small telescopes, which some amateurs may have. By precise synchronisation they can look at the same part of the sky at the same time and by comparing pictures extend the resolution of the lensing effect.
