Well, the conventional wisdom is that Obama fears Romney, so if you're implying Democrats are behind this, those two facts are at least consistent, although by no means conclusive.
But you have mentioned before repeatedly that you believe the Dems REALLY fear the Conservatives, not the moderate GOP, which just doesn't jibe with the facts at all. By your assessment, Obama is attacking the wrong guy.
I saw the "Winning our Future" boss on TV the other day, and perused their website, and they sure don't look like an Obama fifth column. They sure look and sound like Gingrich people to me. In fact, the leader was interviewed and he reported he was a personal friend of the Gingriches, although he had not seen them recently due to the PAC rules and regulations forbidding contact between PAC and candidate. (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) Gingrich has said nothing to dispute any of this. I have no reason not to take him at his word.
No, I think the explanation that best fits the facts is that this is exactly what it seems. Gingrich is doing whatever it takes to win, and failing that, he'll drag the rest of the party down with him if he can. After all, he never felt he had a chance at the start, this whole exercise was just a way to plug his own brand that spun out of control because of the abysmal inadequacy of the GOP field of contenders. It fits the past behavior of the "leading intellectual on the Right", too.
And he has done nothing to repudiate or distance himself from WOF. In fact, he appears to be pressing the attack on Romney further. Of course, Newt could be on the Liberal payroll. I wouldn't put it past him. The man is a cynical opportunist. Win or lose, his publishing and lecture businesses are getting great publicity.
I think the confusion on the Right needs no conspiracy theories. It can best be explained by the obvious: a ludicrous slate of absurd Republican candidates, and a realization that the Tea Party obstructionist congressional tactic and the same old tired fear and hate campaign is just wearing thin. Unless the economy tanks or we get into a war between now and November, I predict Obama by 5% of the popular vote, no matter who wins the GOP primaries.
I feel a lot better about the future of my country than I did just a few months ago when I was fearing a Perry Presidency. Barring the unexpected, only Romney has a chance of challenging Obama for the support of the middle of the road voter, without which no American Presidential candidate can hope to win.
Personally, I would love it if Santorum, Paul or Gingrich gets to run against Obama (not a chance for Huntsman), but unless something really unexpected happens to Mitt, its not likely. Besides, even if it does, the party leaders will fire up the smoke filled rooms and someone new, unexpected, and acceptable will emerge from Tampa in August.
It isn't just the public that's starting to tire of the Right, the Party has pretty much had it with them too. The spirited defense of Romney we've seen in the last few days has convinced me of that.
