It gives an interesting question as to whether we could distinguish encrypted transmissions from noise. One fundamental of encryption is to ensure that patterns do not occur as such patterns could correspond to often used letter sequences. For example the word "the" could lead to a repetitive part of an enciphered text if the code was not good enough. Also modern codes are to all practical purposes impossible to break so we could not expect to decrypt alien transmissions into any sort of pattern.
