You don't need light "bulbs" to grow plants in space

I recently saw a program called "Space Medicine" on either Discovery, Discovery Health, or TLC. This might be a series on one of those networks. The particular episode I saw involved IR LEDs that a small business invented specificially to grow plants in space. These LEDs are much more efficient than light bulbs and are actually cool to the touch. A doctor was experimenting with these LEDs to treat chemotherapy patients. Chemo, in addition to causing a general mess in the body, often causes sores in the patient's mouth making it difficult to eat. The doctor exposes the patient to perhaps one minute of the IR light on the outside of the mouth. Early results indicate that far fewer mouth sores develop. This is an interesting medical spin off of a technology designed for space use. One of my aunts is undergoing chemo and has developed the sores. I wish she could get this type of treatment.
