Here's an interesting page I found covering a variety of GR metrics describing different FTL and "inertialess" solutions. There seems to be a lot of good ideas that might in the end lead to a proper space-drive.

Of course if near-c or FTL systems are realised by us, then it worsens the Fermi Paradox. The absence of ETIs visiting us becomes a real issue - unless, once you can travel FTL, visiting uncontacted worlds is pointless. Can't trade, but I suppose there could be a tourist trade?

Hmmm... might explain UFOs and their weird behaviour? They just gawp at us rather than act rationally. Sounds like your typical tour group to me!
