Ed,

You're right about nitrogen narcosis. It is my understanding that nitrogen is difficult to get out of solution (that's why astronauts pre-breath on pure oxygen). However a noble gas like argon leaves the blood quickly. I vaguely remember seeing some comment to that effect in a CRC manual. Again I could be all wet on this (that's why I'm bringing it up).
