Some Moon past projects

Here's what mr Burton writes about dreams of the past:

A lot of studies were done from the early sixties to early 1968 on extending
LM stay times from at least 2 weeks on up to a month. These lofty studies
pretty much died when Apollo 18 was canceled in 1967 due to budget cuts.
That signaled the death knell for extended ops (beyond the J-missions).

A LM taxi was envisioned that would ferry the crew to the surface where it
would be powered down for two weeks. Its purpose was simply transportation
up & down from orbit. After landing in the taxi, the crew would walk to a LM
shelter that had landed earlier. The shelter had no ascent engine, hardware
or fuel, so it would have had been modified with ample supplies for 2 weeks
(or a month, depending on the state of the art). It would have had an
airlock so that the cabin would not have to be depressurized, wasting oxygen.
Power could have been supplied by a number of schemes under study, such as
solar arrays or an RTG.

The J-mission rover was the result of the 1967 budget cuts. It was an
offshoot of grander plans for a similar but larger rover that could be
controlled from earth and driven to the LM taxi landing site. The crew would
use it while there, then it would continue on under remote control to a new
site, where the next crew would use it. Power would have come from solar
arrays or an RTG.

It was sci-fi alive, but as the well worn saying goes -- "No bucks, no Buck
Rogers."
