Orionids Oct 21, but wait for the Leonids!
The Orionids (remnants of Halley's comet) peak around 3 am local time October 21. However, theLeonids on Nov. 18 are expected to be really spectacular, with some areas of the world (like China) seeing up to 15,000 meteorites per hour - that's over 4 per second! On the west coast of North America, the count will be lower, in the range of 1200 per hour as far as I can gather, but that's still one every 3 seconds.
I know one would have to be in a very dark location with probably 20 or so eyes to see the maximum number, but still it promises to be quite a show.
Of course, it will be cloudy here that night, just as it has been for every auroral display in the last year or so. :(
