Re: Shuttle and then?

"Development work managed by JSC already has begun with two contracts totaling more than $7 million awarded earlier this year, beginning two innovative projects: designing an inflatable spacecraft airlock and characterizing materials that could protect astronauts from an exploding spacecraft. "

That's somewhat interesting about protecting astronauts from a explosion.
At first thought it was a silly idea, but it got me wondering. First I thought a simple idea would be to have crew in their spacesuits instead of flight suits- it's somewhat bulletproof and designed to protect against thermal differences, thongh probably not designed to be fireproof. And/or perhaps individual pods, these could be fireproof and could have airbags which activate to reduce impact gees- also they would be sealed to protect against rapid pressure increase caused a explosion. Then there is making cabin environment non-flamable- how about liberal use of asbestos?
Any thoughts/real info about this?
