What are the odds of humans becoming extinct?

Hi everyone.

Here is an article describing Stephen Hawkings new book.

Partial quote from Hawkings:
"genetic engineering can be done in a small lab. You can't regulate every lab in the world. The danger is that either by accident or design, we create a virus that destroys us.

I don't think the human race will survive the next thousand years, unless we spread into space. There are too many accidents that can befall life on a single planet."

I disagree with him on this. I realize that we could all be killed by a large asteroid hitting the planet, but I think the odds of that happening in the next thousand years are very low.

I don't see how any other accident could kill all humans on the planet. Even terrorists do not want to kill all people on the planet. Even if some terrorist nation was somehow successful in killing the rest of the world, then the people in that terrorist nation would still be alive, and the human race would continue.

Even if there was some new and terrible disease that killed 99.9% of the population, we would still have 6 million people left on the planet, and those humans left would be the strong and healthy ones.

What could kill 100% of the human population?

Do you think it is possible that someone could create a virus that could kill all humans?

There may be a few people who would want to kill everyone on the planet, but would any of those nuts have the capability to wipe out the whole human race?
