The Fantasy of an "Earth-Like" Mars

The most remarkable item to note about the series, and for that matter the thinking of those involved, is that at that time, Mars was believed by most to be Earth-like, and fit for human habitation.

We now know that Mars does not have much of atmosphere (its close to a vacuum), very very little water, and further more is regularly bathed by immediately lethal amounts of radiation coming from our Sun.

It was a nice dream while it lasted.
