Space/Science

a layman's attempt at cosmology...

Is it assumed (or perhaps deduced) that there was one big bang which began our universe?

My question is why do we assume just one big bang? In a fairly spacious universe, could not several big bangs have occured? Perhaps in a distant part of the universe a big bang is impending...too distant for us to detect. I guess this would suggest a kind of marriage between the big bang and steady state theories.

Any thoughts on the worthiness/worthlessness of this idea?
