Summary:
Sky watchers across North America and Europe saw an eye-catching encounter between the Full Moon and Saturn on Dec. 1, 2001 (UT). For many observers the Moon passed directly in front of the ringed planet! The event was a fitting prelude to Saturn's "opposition" on Dec. 3, 2001. On that date Saturn will lie directly opposite the Sun -- and unusually close to Earth. Even a small department store telescope will reveal Saturn's breath-taking rings.
