MSNBC Space BBS and all others to shut down for good

In a decision made public Dec. 3, MSNBC.com General Manager Ona Karasa announced that the site's Discussion Boards will be shut down as of Dec. 14. This was a business decision, based on the judgment that our discussion board software was antiquated and that the support staff necessary to operate the boards could not be supported, in light of the sharp downturn in advertising revenues we have experienced in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This is a sad day for all of us at MSNBC Communities. We have known you and grown with you for five years. You have used our discussion boards to express your views on the news and interact with others during some important moments in history, from the impeachment of the president to the contentious presidential election of 2000, space shuttle launches, Mars explorations, World Series, Nascar races and a variety of other events. We have enjoyed our work and will miss it. We will also miss our users and the lively and often contentious interactions that have unfolded in this space. We'll have more information as the week goes on about other interactive options at MSNBC.com. Meanwhile, consider the next several days as an opportunity to say your goodbyes and continue doing what you do best: express your feelings in an unfettered online environment.
