Quantum Cosmology
Early models of the atom predicted that electrons would spiral inward and the atom would collapse in seconds. We know this does not happen or else nothing would exist as we know it. Modern quantum mechanical models of the atom and electron orbitals create probability clouds of electrons around atoms. These clouds have different shapes, some spherical shells, some dumbbell shaped, some have complex bulbous and irregular shapes:

The question of whether the universe will expand forever or collapse is still being debated. Maybe if we have a steady-state universe matter will arrange itself according to some as-yet undefined cosmic Schroedinger Equation.
