Nick was referring to the Moffett Field Museum that is housed in Hanger One at Moffett Field. That museum is a nice one. Its main exhibit is about the dirigable "Macon" which used to be based there (Macon crash off the coast of California near Big Sur). The name "Moffett" comes from Admiral Moffett who died when the Macon's sister ship the "Akron" crashed in the Atlantic Ocean. The Moffett Field Museum also has many nice World War II exhibits with World War II vets conducting tours (the guy who showed Nick and I around was a vetran/hero from the Battle at Midway Island).
Hanger One was built for the Macon and became a white elephant after the Macon crashed. Hanger One is enormous and has the atmosphere of a Gothic Cathedral when seen from inside (also in the spring time it sounds like an avary because it's full of swallows). When the Navy still ran Moffett Field, they were pretty good about maintaining Hanger One. However after Moffett Field was closed as a Navy base and handed over to NASA Ames, the level of maintenance for Hanger One decreased significantly. Unfortunately, Hanger One is the ultimate white elephant, viz. a huge iron building that's heavily contaminated with lead due to being painted with lead based paint for over half a century. Supposably NASA Ames and the Moffett Field Museum are quarreling over who should pay for Hanger One. The Museum has almost no money and Ames is threatening to kick them off base if they don't spend more on maintenance. Truth to tell neither NASA Ames or the Museum should pay for Hanger One. It should be declared a national monument and its maintenance paid for directly by the federal government.
