Re: The phantom cosmonauts

A very interesting and amusing link. The MSNBC crew would have had a field day with this stuff!

My favorites:

"The KGB Dwarf"

The feat of remotely driving the unmanned Lunokhod lunar rover around the lunar surface must have seemed a bit beyond Soviet technology for some Muscovites. So an urban legend was put about that the diminutive Lunokhod was actually driven by a midget KGB agent on a one-way suicide mission to the lunar surface. How sufficient provisions were packed into the tiny rover during its eleven month mission was not explained...

"Profiri Yebenov"

A Moscow urban legend reported that the Apollo 11 astronauts were in fact stranded on the moon due to an engine malfunction. A naked

[!!!!] Russian cosmonaut, Pofiri Yebemov, obviously stranded on the moon some time before, assisted them in repairing their lunar module so they could return safely to earth. Real-world cosmonaut Gregori Grechko went so far as to ask US moonwalker Aldrin if there was any truth to the story. An astounded Aldrin denied the story and confirmed that they had not encountered any human beings or wild life on the lunar surface.

Boy, are those Russians tough or what!

P.S. allow me to put in another enthusiatic plug for the home page of this site, The Encyclopedia Astronautica. I have never seen a better collection of space information. If it's space-related, and it isn't on this site somewhere, you probably don't need to know it.
