Re: Orbital Mechanics 1.02a

>Your craft is in motion & the sail pushes against the wind (plasma)/light (sails): hit it so the force pushes your sail in the direction of your orbital motion & the energy of your orbit increases (ie, you move outwards, slowing down in the process);

This wording was seriously ordinary & needs clarification; which i make here:

The sail (in an accelerative mode) moves your craft into a higher energy orbit; & were the accleration instantaneous (as with a conventional chemical engine), the velocity would actually decrease over time because the radius of your orbit has increased (& you need less velocity to fly the orbit stably). Sails can provide continuous acceleration, however; & as a result craft can increase orbital energy & velocity over time.

The reverse direction is easier to visualise: using a sail to lose orbital velocity (decellerating, in other words) is reducing your ability to fight solar gravity, so you're effectively putting the craft into a kind of free fall accelerating (if you were to continue to use the sail right to destruction... not the easiest thing technically to do) until you actually hit the Sun at high speed.

Please note that so-called propulsionless systems such as sails - & M2P2 (if it can be made to work) is essentially just a plasma sail - DO act against the ambient environment of space, unlike chemical or solar electric propulsion systems; & it is the physical interaction with this environment (photons for solar sails; the solar wind for a plasma-based system) which gives you tyour thrust.
