Trouble Forming Earthlike Planets

http://abob.libs.uga.edu/bobk/ccc/cc011102.html # 5

A lot of work to support what seems to me to be common sense. I have used the argument many times in the ETI debates that giant planets much closer in than Jupiter would not allow Earthlike planets to form. Accepting the predominant theory that the asteroid belt from 2 to 5 AU is caused by the effects of Jupiter's Gravity implies to me that this unstable zone for planetary formation should move inward as the limiting gas giant does and/or as its mass increases. It may take a lot of simulation to determine the exact consequences, but the overall trend seems obvious to me.

Does anyone have some more quantitative insight in the form of some rule of thumb power laws?

Regards.
