Thanks for the clarification. It piqued my curiosity and I've been trying to find info on the differences between something like a spectrophotometer (like like the IR Specs we use in organic chemistry labs to ID chemicals) and a mass spectrometer (which I think is the one used detect isotopic differences).
Will report back after I dig through the two texts I used in college: McMurray's Organic Chemistry and Physics by Halliday and Resnick.
