My guess: glaciers

That's what I thought when I first saw the image: At least two episodes of glaciation, resulting in two sets of scratches on the underlying surface. The site is in that interesting band at 70 degrees south, subject to freeze and thaw over short periods of time in the recent epoch, and (probably) over the eons has seen the expansion and retreat of the polar cap.

That's my layman's two cents' worth.
