The 20th SF is the 20th Special Forces Group. It's a Reserve/National Guard outfit with a battalion in most of the states east of the Mississippi. In the west, the counterpart is the 19th SF.
I joined the 20th after graduating high school in 1975. I went through basic and infantry training at Ft. Polk, LA followed by jump school at Ft. Benning, GA. After that, I spent some time at Ft. Bragg before returning to guard status. I wasn't some John Wayne snake eater but I managed to pretty well hold my own.
Following several "incidents" during my jumps were I got pretty banged up and nearly much worse, I decided I was getting "too old for this" and switched to active duty Air Force in 1978. I was 20 and had decided there just wasn't a lot of job demand for someone trained to jump out of airplanes and kill people.
