Liquid Water-Based Solutions At or Near Martian Surface
While the applied pressure at the surface of Mars is insufficient to permit stable pure liquid water to exist, this does NOT apply to concentrated mineral solutions. The reduction of partial vapor pressure of water in such saturated solutions of hygroscopic materials as calcium chloride permits such solutions to be stable at the surface of Mars. Solutions comparable to the saturated water in the Dead Sea today would also be stable.
I point out Dead Sea water for two reasons.
(1) It contains dissolved minerals similar to those which could be leached out of rocks found on the surface of Mars today.
(2) Dead Sea water contains cyanobacteria which seems to indicate that conditions on Mars may support similar life forms.
Therefore, saturated mineral solutions in liquid water MAY exist at or near the surface of Mars and may bear life.
NOTE: I did NOT say that such solutions DO exist, only that they MAY exist. I also do not say that life DOES exist at or near the Martian surface, only that it MAY
