Project Pluto

Back in the 1950s wasn't there a research project at the Nevada Test Site that was trying to develop a nuclear-powered jet engine? I think it was called Project Pluto.
If I remember right, while the nuclear jet engine was running there is a 2-mile exclusion zone around the engine test stand because of the intense radiation and neutron flux.
Can we actually use such technology for spacecraft? It sounds rather dangerous to me (even for unmanned craft).
What are your thoughts?
