Holding steady

Some years ago, before camcorders, I had occasions to take 16mm movies, sometimes with a 14 inch lens. It wasn't usually possible to use a tripod, or even a pillow, as one could never tell when or where one would be filming. Rarely would we want to be seen doing it, or we wouldn't have used that lens.

Even with a rifle grip on the camera and with practice, very, very good target shooters couldn't hold the darned thing steady. Just a normal heart beat, and sometimes it was pounding during the filming, would cause the frame to bounce around.

We used to laugh about being able to tell how much tension the camera operator had been under by watching how fast the camera jumped around the subject.
